ORESTES by G J Lewis

This is submarine Orestes’ espionage adventure spanning one year of hectic activity out of her base in Scotland and through the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Arctic oceans. It is set in the early 1960’s, during the Cuban missile crisis and the Khrushchev/Kennedy confrontation in Cuba. While the Russians and the British race to establish radar and sonar supremacy, there is extraordinary action from ordinary men on a British conventional submarine, determining who wins. It is unthinkable that a foreign agent could work on the inside, supported by a determined team, and yet ...

S12 Submarine Orestes becomes the focus of Russian attention for her involvement in the development of a British sonar system, which they realise is akin to the progress of their radar technology. The crew think they are deployed in the usual peacetime Naval manoeuvres of being prepared for conflict. Their odd double lives as submariners and family men come under increasing threat as events close in, and Orestes becomes both hunter and prey.
